How to Install Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 on Windows Server 2012

In this blog post we will be exploring Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 Setup on a Windows Server 2012 Member server.

Minimum Permission Requisites

The account with which we are going to install Exchange Server 2013 should be a member of Enterprise Admins Group and Schema Admins Group.



DC Name : DC1

Domain Functional Level : Windows Server 2012

Forest Functional Level : Windows Server 2012

Single AD Site.

Preparing Active Directory

In Figure 1.1 post Importing Module we have to install windows feature by running “Install-WindowsFeature RSTA-ADDS”

No restart is required post installing the RSAT-ADDS Feature.

Run the below command using shell for installing Windows Features for Mailbox Role and Client Access Role.

Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation

After Restarting the server we have to install the below software’s in the following sequence.

1) Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, Core Runtime 64-bit – Download

Select I have read and accept the license terms.

And select Install.

Unified Communications Managed API 4.0 Runtime setup is completed.

We have to continue with Microsoft Filter pack 2.0.

2) Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack 2.0 – 64 Bit – Download

Microsoft Filter pack 2.0 setup has completed successfully.

3) Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Pack SP1 – 64 Bit – Download

So far we have completed software pre-requisites.

Now lets Prepare the Active Directory for Installing Exchange Server 2013 for the first time.

Running Prepare Schema by running the following command.

Active Directory is now Prepared. Now lets start the installation of Exchange with GUI.

Since this is a test environment I have selected “Don’t check for updates right now”.

In figure 3.6 we have selected both roles.

Click the install once it is showing as 100%

Check the Launch Exchange Administration Center after finishing Exchange setup.

    Could you please elaborate the differences when we install 2nd or 3rd exchange servers in the same environment. What steps are applicable or not applicable.

    It is same. The only thing which you have to remember is the design.. For example: the role on the each servers and their placement.

    Yes. One or multiple it remains same. Only difference is the internet facing server and also across site if its a multiple sites scenario.
